Mariners Basin in Mission Bay was closed because of a sewage spill, authorities said.

A main sewer line became overloaded and broke about 9:30 a.m. Monday at Bayside Walk and Balboa Court in South Mission Beach, spilling about 4,800 gallons of sewage, said Dan Avera, assistant deputy director for the county’s Environmental Health Services Department.

The sewage entered a storm drain at the intersection that empties into Mariners Basin at the eastern end of Balboa Court, Avera said. Authorities diverted the flow to another sewer line about 11:30 a.m. The cause of the overload is still being investigated, he said.

Warning signs have been posted along the shore of Mariners Basin and will remain in place until the water is safe for recreation. The earliest the area could be reopened is Wednesday afternoon, Avera said.
