Second-seeded Ivan Lendl rallied to win the last five games and defeated Carl-Uwe Steeb of Germany, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, in the first round of the Hamlet Challenge Cup at Commack, N.Y.
Lendl, who has fallen to fifth in the world rankings, had to struggle against Steeb, ranked 52nd. He was the only winner because the tournament’s day session was postponed by Hurricane Bob.
