NOTES : Fountain Valley Wins at Pony World Series

Travis Clutter pitched 5 2/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out 15 of the 22 batters he faced Monday to help Fountain Valley to an 11-2 victory over Washington, Pa., at the Pony World Series in Washington, Pa.

Clutter entered the game with two on and one out in the second inning and struck out the next two batters. Trailing 2-1 in the sixth inning, Christopher Ponchak hit a grand slam that sparked a nine-run outburst.

The Fountain Valley team, consisting of 13- and 14-year-olds, will play a team from Oak Park, Ill., in a third round-robin game Wednesday. Fountain Valley is 2-0.

Jeff Cunningham’s bases-loaded grounder in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Tustin an 8-7 victory over host Columbus, Ga., in the Junior Olympic Super Series.

Tustin, which qualified for the tournament by winning the 15- to 16-year-old Pony Colt national championship earlier this summer, will play Pensacola (Fla.) today for a spot in Thursday’s gold-medal game.

Luis Estrella had two hits and two runs batted in for Tustin.
