CYPRESS : Two Suspects Held in Store Burglary

Share

Two men were in custody in City Jail Tuesday after allegedly stealing checks and cash from a local market and trying to break into a restaurant next door, police said.

Randal Suerin, 32, of Cypress and Manuel Bettencourt, 32, of Artesia were each held on $25,000 bond on suspicion of commercial burglary. Police allege that they broke into Ho Binh’s Market, 4706 Lincoln Ave., through a rear door at about 3:15 a.m. Tuesday.

An alarm was set off at the market, but by the time police arrived they found only a smattering of blood by the door. They believe that Bettencourt cut himself while breaking in.

The two suspects were spotted leaving the area in a cab, and police were able to find the vehicle as the two men allegedly made a getaway. Bettencourt’s hand was bleeding, police said.

An undisclosed amount of cash and checks believed to have been taken from the market was also found at Bettencourt’s home, about a block from the crime scene, police said. Police alleged that the suspects dropped off the items there before hailing the cab.

Lt. John Schaefer, investigations bureau commander, said police also believe that the suspects stole some tools from a home in the neighborhood early Tuesday and tried to break into a restaurant next to the market.
