PRO FOOTBALL REPORT : WEEKDAY UPDATE : RAIDERS : Bell Gets Cash Settlement, Release Because of Injury

Share

In the spring of 1990, the Rams traded disgruntled tailback Greg Bell to the Raiders for a fourth-round draft choice. He considered it a cross-town swap from hell to heaven. But while Bell received the money he wanted with the Raiders, he never got much of a chance.

As part of the team’s roster reduction to 60 players, the Raiders released Bell after making an injury settlement on his two-year contract.

Bell’s agent, Steve Feldman, said the buyout was mutually agreed upon. It allows Bell the option of looking around the league for work or returning to the Raiders once his sprained left ankle has healed in two or three weeks.

Had the Raiders placed Bell on injured reserve before Aug. 26, he would not have been eligible for the regular season. He is now a free agent able to negotiate with any NFL team.

To reduce their roster to 60, the Raiders cut receivers Darrel Hopper, Stefon Adams and Keith Wright; linebackers Bruce Klostermann and Tim Cofield, offensive linemen Jeff Grimes and Malcolm Showell, defensive tackle Tim Rother, safety Marcus Wilson and running backs Doug Lloyd and Charles Young.

The Raiders traded tight end Rob Tyler to the Indianapolis Colts for an undisclosed draft choice. The Raiders were granted a roster exemption for defensive tackle Mike Wise, who has left camp.

The team also disclosed that it released offensive lineman Todd Peat last week after an injury settlement. Peat had surgery to repair torn triceps.
