Tiger Woods, 15, the U.S. Junior Amateur champion from Cypress, shot 78 in the first round of the U.S. Amateur in Chattanooga, Tenn., after flying in Monday night from Colorado Springs, Colo., and getting only four hours sleep.

Woods, who played the tougher Honors Course, is well off the pace of leader Franklin Langham of Thomson, Ga., who shot five-under 65 at the Cleveland Country Club course.

The defending champion and tournament favorite, Phil Mickelson of San Diego, had three bogeys on the front nine and shot 72 on the easier of the two courses.
