VENTURA : Cache of Weapons Seized at Apartment

Share

Ventura police have seized an arsenal of 35 firearms from the home of a mental patient after county health workers summoned officers to the patient’s apartment, authorities said.

Officers confiscated the revolvers, pistols, rifles and shotguns Thursday, Officer Joan Schafer said. They also impounded daggers, billy clubs, metal knuckles and fighting knives. About 1,000 rounds of ammunition were also found, she said. “Several items seized are illegal . . . such as throwing stars, throwing knives, trench knives and tracer ammunition,” Schafer said.

The man, who police would not identify because he is a patient, is being detained at a mental health clinic in Santa Barbara County, police said. No charges have been filed.

The man was taken into custody under a state law that allows people who are dangerous or gravely ill to be detained, police said. The man cannot be released until he is found to be of no danger to himself or the public, they said.

Police will forward a criminal complaint for illegal possession of firearms to the district attorney for possible prosecution, police said.

Officers went to the man’s home because the mental health workers had been told he had firearms at his North Dos Caminos Street apartment, Officer Jon Castellanos said Friday.
