BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Lack of Walks Undermines Offense

The Angels batted .226 during their recent 11-game trip and were batting only .242 at Anaheim Stadium before beginning a six-game stand Friday.

“We’ve been that way all year,” hitting instructor Deron Johnson said. “We’re last in the league in walks. If you could teach a walk, that’d be great. We’ve got the hitters, veteran hitters that have been through this situation before and have an idea of what to do when they go up to the plate. It’s a matter of executing.”

Johnson said all he can do is continue to reinforce fundamentals. “We’ve got 41 games left and I’d like to win 41,” he said. “You never stop working because you might find something out that will help for next year.”

Bryan Harvey said he’s “thinking a little bit” about breaking Donnie Moore’s single-season save record, but not when he’s on the mound. “Out there, I’m just thinking about getting ‘em out,” said Harvey, who pitched a hitless ninth inning against the Red Sox Friday to earn his 30th save, one short of the record Moore set in 1985. “You can’t let it take your mind off what you do. If you do, it might take you a couple of times to get it.”

The Angels face a roster decision Sunday, when center fielder Junior Felix is eligible for activation after his 20-day rehabilitation assignment with Class-A Palm Springs. Felix has twice been on the disabled list because of a strained right calf muscle. . . . Left-hander Floyd Bannister, still assigned to Palm Springs, said he hasn’t been told whether he will be recalled by the Angels. “I’ve only really had a couple of bad innings where I get a tired arm, like in spring training,” Bannister said.
