PRO FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Robinson, Evans Are Back

Share

The Raiders survived their waiver wire gambles, allowing the team to set its final 47-man roster.

As expected, veteran linebacker Jerry Robinson and quarterback Vince Evans cleared waivers and were returned to the active roster.

Robinson, 34, is a 12-year veteran who will earn $710,000. The Raiders guessed correctly that other NFL teams were not interested in Robinson’s age or salary. He has lost his starting job in the team’s regular defense but is still a member of pass defense packages.

Evans, 36, will return as quarterback Jay Schroeder’s backup, taking the pressure off rookie Todd Marinovich, who would have been thrust into that role had Evans been claimed by another team.

With less fanfare, the Raiders also reclaimed free-agent Derrick Crudup, who had been impressive in training camp as Ronnie Lott’s backup at strong safety.

To make room on the roster for the reclaimed players, the Raiders placed rookie Nick Bell on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Bell must sit out a minimum of four weeks before returning. Also placed on injured reserve were tailback Vance Mueller, because of a knee injury, and nose tackle Roy Hart, also because of a knee injury. Hart was a key member of the London Monarchs, who won the first championship of the World League of American Football last July.
