San Diego Views Unedited Emmycast

While Angelenos were getting an edited version of Sunday night’s Emmy Awards broadcast, viewers in San Diego got the whole thing--complete with comedian Gilbert Gottfried’s controversial and unscripted monologue on masturbation.

Gottfried’s raunchy routine, inspired by the arrest in a Florida adult movie house of Pee-wee Herman (Paul Reubens), was carried live on the East Coast but edited out for later broadcast in other time zones. But about half of Fox’s West Coast affiliates taped the earlier East Coast feed and broadcast it instead of the edited version, according to Fox spokeswoman Andi Sporkin.

A spokeswoman for San Diego’s XETV Channel 6 said the station always tapes the East Coast feed for its broadcasts and had not been alerted that the awards program had been edited for the second feed. The station received about 10 complaint calls from viewers, she said.
