California IN BRIEF : BERKELEY : Women’s Studies Elevated in Rank
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The women’s studies program at UC Berkeley has been promoted to a full-fledged department. The change means the newly designated department has more control over its faculty appointments and is recognized as an academic specialty, said Irene Tinker, chairwoman of Women’s Studies. UC Berkeley joins a handful of colleges that recognize women’s studies as full-fledged departments, though 621 universities nationwide have women’s studies programs. The program at UC Berkeley began in 1976.
