Simi Valley police officers will soon be driving in style thanks to the City Council’s decision to purchase 11 new patrol vehicles.

The council at its meeting Monday authorized the purchase of the 1991 Chevrolet Caprice patrol cars at a total cost of $192,500. Nine of the vehicles are black and white and are outfitted with radios and other police equipment, city officials said. The other two cars are unmarked and will be used by the department’s gang unit.

The cars will be purchased at a special discount rate from a Los Angeles County car dealer, according to a city staff report. By purchasing 1991 model vehicles instead of 1992 cars, the Police Department will save $33,000 to $44,000, the report said.
