A Carlsbad police officer was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle while on traffic duty, police said.

Patrolman William R. Jack, 30, crashed his motorcycle into the center divider at Faraday Avenue, 100 yards west of El Camino Avenue, at 8:56 p.m. Sunday. He was flown by helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where he died of head injuries at 11:29 p.m.

Jack was traveling east on Faraday and apparently did not see the raised center divider as he was passing a car, the California Highway Patrol said. The cycle struck the divider, rolled several times and crashed into a sign post.

Jack had been on the Carlsbad force three years. He had previously served with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Sunday, he had been dispatched to Faraday Avenue to help control crowds and traffic at an outdoor concert at Faraday and Rutherford Street.

“Jack was very well liked,” police dispatcher Russ Overstreet said. “This place is really a mess today.”

The CHP is investigating, Overstreet said.
