The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) is expected to decide tonight if South Africa can compete in the World Gymnastics Championships, which begin Saturday at Indianapolis.

Five gymnasts--two men and three women--are in Indianapolis and are scheduled to practice in official training sessions before the meet begins. However, the FIG is still deliberating whether to allow them to compete.

South Africa was banned from the Olympics in 1970 because of its policy of racial separation. The country was readmitted as a member of the International Olympic Committee in July. This would mark South Africa’s return to international competition.
