Notes on a Scorecard - Sept. 5, 1991

Share

This is the week of the quarterback duels--Ty Detmer vs. Tommy Maddox at the Rose Bowl Saturday night and John Elway vs. Jay Schroeder at the Coliseum Sunday. . . .

With Marcus Allen out of the Raider lineup, Schroeder could be as important to his team as any of them. . . .

Schroeder has had some of his greatest moments against Denver. On a Monday night in September of 1988, he helped rally the Raiders from a 24-0 halftime deficit to a 30-24 overtime victory at Mile High Stadium. . . .

“Schroeder is like another Terry Bradshaw,” Al Davis said after that game. . . .

The Broncos may still believe Davis. They are 1-5 against the Raiders since Schroeder’s arrival in 1988. They won the previous four meetings. . . .

Making his second visit to the Southland this season will be Detmer, the Heisman Trophy winner from Brigham Young and San Antonio. . . .

Funny, but he may finish only third in this year’s balloting among quarterbacks who hail from Texas. . . .

Besides him, there are David Klingler, the gunslinger from the University of Houston, and Maddox, who came from Bedford, Tex., and had an exceptional redshirt freshman season at UCLA. . . .

BYU was beaten by Florida State last Thursday in the Disneyland Pigskin Classic at Anaheim Stadium, 44-28, but it wasn’t Detmer’s fault. The rest of the Cougars were outmanned by the nation’s top-ranked team. Against the Bruins, Detmer should be able to improve upon his numbers--19 completions in 32 passes for 229 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. . . .

Maddox, at 195, is 10 pounds heavier than last year and has been putting considerable zip on the ball during practice. . . .

Asked what a capacity crowd at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa., sounds like, Penn State co-captain Al Golden said: “It’s like Joe (Paterno) yelling in my ear.” . . .

This is the first time since 1962 that all four California pro football teams have lost their opening games. . . .

Joe Montana is the only remaining member of the San Francisco 49ers to have played on all four of their Super Bowl championship teams. . . .

In sweeping the opening weekend card, the five NFC East teams allowed only 45 points. . . .

I’m told that the NBC 10-minute ticker seemed more like the 20-minute ticker Sunday. . . .

Look-alikes: Umpire Doug Harvey and President Bush. . . .

The salary cap, which was increased by only $700,000 a team, is the reason for the lack of movement in the NBA. . . .

Locking the box-seat gates might help keep trespassers off the field at Dodger Stadium. . . .

Stadium organist Nancy Hefley should play music from “The Phantom of the Opera” when Alfredo Griffin comes to the plate wearing his face mask. . . .

Dave Hansen, 22, may turn out to be the third baseman the Dodgers hoped Jeff Hamilton would become. . . .

Tom Lasorda has been spending the same kind of hours working with Hansen that he did with Davey Lopes, Ron Cey, Bill Buckner and Bill Russell in the early 1970s. . . .

Jeff Silverman’s piece on Tony Gwynn makes the final issue of California magazine worthwhile to baseball fans. . . .

When Mitch Williams of the Philadelphia Phillies went 8-1 in August, he set a record for victories by a relief pitcher in a month. Mike Marshall won seven for the Dodgers in June of 1974. . . .

Rodney McCray, a Vancouver outfielder who crashed through the wall at Portland in a Pacific Coast League game, has been recalled by the Chicago White Sox. . . .

As many as five league championship series games could be played in the afternoon, but all World Series games will be at night. . . .

Powerful D.J. Dozier, the Minnesota Vikings’ running back, hit only one home run in 171 at-bats with Tidewater of the International League. . . .

Best name for a pinch-runner: Scott Bullett of the Pittsburgh Pirates. . . .

Free-agent signings may decline in the NHL since the New Jersey Devils were awarded St. Louis Blues’ captain and star defenseman Scott Stevens as compensation for the Blues’ signing of less valuable forward Brendan Shanahan. . . .

I was pleasantly surprised that the cap Gabriela Sabatini wore at the U.S. Open didn’t have any advertising on it. . . .

Which is more remarkable, Jimmy Connors reaching the men’s quarterfinals at 39 or Jennifer Capriati reaching the women’s semifinals at 15? . . .

Two of the guards on The Times’ 1981 All-San Gabriel Valley high school basketball team were Mike Powell of West Covina Edgewood and Cecil Fielder of La Puente Nogales.
