PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Ex-Raider Hilger Signs With Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks, having lost starting quarterback Dave Krieg because of a broken thumb, signed free-agent quarterback Rusty Hilger, who played three seasons with the Raiders .

Krieg was injured in a 27-24 loss in Sunday’s opener at New Orleans. He has been put on injured reserve and will be out from five to seven weeks, Coach Chuck Knox said.

With Krieg sidelined, Jeff Kemp will start at quarterback against the New York Jets in the Kingdome Sunday, with rookie Dan McGwire in reserve.

Quarterback Randall Cunningham of the Philadelphia Eagles underwent major surgery on his left knee and Dr. Clarence Shields said Cunningham should be ready by next year’s training camp.

Shields, who repaired Cunningham’s other knee 10 years ago, performed the two-hour operation in Los Angeles at Centinela Hospital Medical Center. Cunningham tore the medial collateral ligament and posterior cruciate ligament. . . . The San Diego Chargers signed defensive tackle Darryl Grant, who was released by the Washington Redskins in their final roster cut. . . . The Miami Dolphins signed holdout linebacker Hugh Green, 32, to a one-year contract worth $500,000.
