Collins Eliminated From Surfing Event
Newport Beach’s Richie Collins was eliminated in the fifth round Thursday at the $50,000 Body Glove Surf Bout IV at Lower Trestles.
Collins, the 1989 Op Pro champion, finished third in his heat behind defending Surf Bout champion Kelly Slater and second-place finisher John Shimooka of Hawaii.
Other surfers advancing were Seal Beach native Mary Thomas, Laguna Beach’s Jeff Booth, Brian McNulty of Capistrano Beach, Huntington Beach’s Noah Budroe and Scott Farnsworth, San Clemente’s Danny Melhado, Hawaii’s Derek and Michael Ho, and Encinitas’ Brad Gerlach, a Huntington Beach High graduate.
