SPORTS ON WEEKEND TV : All Eyes on Bouncing Balls

This figures to be a weekend of heavy sports television viewing, with the Rams playing the Super Bowl champion New York Giants, the men’s and women’s U.S. Open tennis finals, a possible preview of baseball’s National League championship series and six college football games involving members of the Associated Press Top 25.

Pro Football: The Rams, upset by the Phoenix Cardinals in their opener, head to East Rutherford, N.J., to face the Giants at 10 a.m. Sunday on Channels 2 and 8. The San Diego Chargers play the San Francisco 49ers at 1 p.m. on Channels 4, 36 and 39. The Houston Oilers and Cincinnati Bengals meet in TNT’s 5 p.m. game.

College Football: No. 23 UCLA opens its season against No. 25 Brigham Young tonight at 7 on Prime Ticket. No. 7 Notre Dame launches its five-year contract with NBC today with a game against Indiana at 10:30 a.m. on Channels 4, 36 and 39. No. 4 Washington is the highest-ranked team on TV this weekend, visiting Stanford at 12:30 p.m. on Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42.

Tennis: Coverage of the U.S. Open begins today at 8 a.m. on Channels 2 and 8 with the Ivan Lendl-Stefan Edberg semifinal, followed by the women’s final and the Jimmy Connors-Jim Courier men’s semifinal. The men’s final is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. on the same stations.

Baseball: The Dodgers play the NL East-leading Pittsburgh Pirates today at 4 p.m and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on KTTV Channel 11. ESPN’s Sunday game will be played at Anaheim Stadium at 5 p.m. between the Angels and Milwaukee Brewers.
