Nigel Mansell, in a Williams-Renault, won the Italian Grand Prix at the Monza autodrome and revived his hopes to catch World Championship leader Ayrton Senna.
Senna, the defending champion, finished second, trailing by 16.26 seconds in his McLaren-Honda, following a duel with Mansell, his British rival. Senna still holds an 18-point advantage over Mansell in the championship standings, with four events left this season.
Mansell covered 53 laps and 191 miles in 1 hour 17 minutes 54.319 seconds at an average speed of 147.109 m.p.h.
