AZTEC UPDATE : NOTEBOOK : Luginbill Reminds Defense: ‘We Haven’t Proven Anything’

The Aztecs got an earful from their coach after practice Wednesday. Specifically, Al Luginbill was unhappy with the effort of SDSU’s defense during the practice.

“If we play like we did today defensively, there won’t be enough digits on the scoreboard to handle the points that will go up,” Luginbill told reporters afterward. “We haven’t proven anything yet. We won one football game.”

The Aztecs defeated Cal State Long Beach Sunday, 49-13, and face Pacific (0-2) Saturday. The Tigers have allowed a total of 129 points in their two games, but they have a fairly potent offense that has scored 64 points.

“My strongest fear is our ability to get ready from week to week defensively for football games,” Luginbill said. “We took a giant leap backward today.”

Dimeback Robert Griffith said SDSU’s odd-day season-opener Sunday is affecting the Aztecs more this week than it did on Sunday. “It threw us out of sync for this week,” Griffith said. “Normally, we’re used to resting our bodies on Sunday. That gives us an extra day to get treatment and do a little homework.” SDSU usually gets a day off on the day after a game, but the Aztecs practiced on Monday this week.
