Controversy Over ACT UP Film

I agree with Mahony in his estimation of “Stop the Church,” which I viewed. It was a harsh, offensive, and certainly one-sided attack on Cardinal John O’Connor and the church in general. It appeared to me to be simply a documentary of a group of self-appointed and self-righteous individuals who felt that their need to say a message was more important than the constitutional right of the bewildered Catholic congregation at St. Patrick’s Cathedral to meet and worship without interruption.

But what struck me most was just how bad the film was in production and editing. From the titles to the selection of the music, the work was far below KCET standards.

The church can stand some criticism and analysis; indeed, as an active Catholic, I am often critical of various things in the church. I wonder why it was so urgent to get this poor work on the air when it was obviously offensive to so many people?
