SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

On one play, Saddleback was maneuvering for a shot at a last-minute game-winning field goal. On the next, Ocean View’s Garrick Twedt made a game-winning play.

Twedt recovered a fumble by Saddleback quarterback Luis Estrella and returned it 63 yards for a touchdown to give Ocean View a 13-7 victory Saturday night at Santa Ana Stadium.

Saddleback (0-1) was at the Ocean View (1-0) 22 in a third-and-nine situation with 1 minute 45 seconds remaining when Estrella bobbled the center snap. He recovered the ball and tried to scramble, then fumbled again after being hit by two Seahawks.

Twedt, a senior cornerback, picked up the ball at the Ocean View 37, broke Estrella’s tackle and ran untouched for the score. And he secured the victory two plays later with an interception that gave Ocean View the ball at the Saddleback 20 with 1:02 left.

A failed fake punt attempt by Ocean View from its own 28 early in the third quarter set up Saddleback’s only score. The Seahawks tried a short snap and a rollout pass out of punt formation on fourth and 12, but Saddleback’s Phil Dorantes knocked down Albert Fanoga’s throw.

Estrella, who completed five of 22 passes for 57 yards, hit Larry Maruffo with a 14-yard touchdown pass five plays later to give Saddleback a 7-0 lead.

Ocean View’s no-huddle offense finally scored in the fourth quarter. Mike Coerper recovered a Saddleback fumble at the Roadrunner eight to set up Scott Park’s touchdown run on the next play, tying the score with 7:22 left.
