In Other Action

The Coastal Commission, meeting in Marina del Rey last week, dealt with three other cases involving the Westside. The following is a summary of the commission’s action: *POTRERO CANYON: By a 7-1 vote, the commission granted a permit that will allow the city of Los Angeles to continue to fill rugged Potrero Canyon and cap it with a nature park. Companies working for the city began trucking dirt to the canyon 3 1/2 years ago as part of a plan to end landslides that threatened pricey homes along the canyon rim. An initial Coastal Commission permit required the fill to be completed, and the park opened, by 1990.

* LAGOON CLEANUP: The commission gave developer Harlan Lee 21 months to clean up Ballona Lagoon on the Marina Peninsula, which was filled with silt during construction of luxury homes. The agency also ordered Lee to post a $375,000 bond with the state to ensure that the cleanup is completed. Lee has agreed to the conditions.

* LECHUZA BEACH: The commission postponed a decision on whether to allow a developer to build the first of up to 17 luxury homes on Malibu’s private Lechuza Beach. After 2 1/2 hours of testimony on Thursday, the panel delayed the matter, saying it wanted to give developer Norman Haynie time to demonstrate his ability to provide permament public access to the beach if the project is approved. Commission officials said the matter will likely be considered in November when the panel meets in San Diego.
