COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine Wins Soccer Tournament

Mike Roach scored on a header midway through the second half to break a 1-1 tie and UC Irvine defeated New Mexico, 2-1, Sunday in the Cal State Fullerton men’s soccer tournament at Fullerton.

Erik Nasarenko scored in the first half as Irvine led at halftime, 1-0. New Mexico’s Mike Hanus tied it with a goal early in the second half before Roach’s tally.

Irvine had defeated Western Kentucky, 3-2, Friday in the four-team tournament.

Irvine (3-1) is off to its best start in the history of the program.

In women’s nonconference soccer:

UC Irvine 3, Regis 1--Irvine’s Molly Lynch scored two second-half goals to break a 1-1 halftime tie in Denver.

Regis’ Amie McMullen scored about nine minutes into the game, but visiting Irvine tied it on a goal by Kerry McGrath with about a minute left in the half. Irvine is 2-2-1; Regis falls to 0-3.
