CAMARILLO : School Texts on Display at Airport

Share

Thirty textbooks that have been recommended for use in California schools next academic year are on display at the Camarillo Airport.

The books cover foreign languages, including Spanish, Japanese, French and German, as well as English as a second language.

State Board of Education officials will consider textbook adoptions in those subject areas next month.

State education officials review and adopt textbooks in various subject areas each year, based on recommendations made by a state-appointed commission of educational experts.

In recent years, some of the proposed textbooks have provoked controversy, including a series of history and social science books approved last year that some ethnic groups criticized as either inaccurate or incomplete.

The Instructional Materials Display Center in Camarillo is one of 30 such centers in the state.

Residents who wish to comment to state officials about the books may fill out a form available at the center, said Rovina Salinas, instructional materials specialist for the Ventura County superintendent of schools.

The textbooks and companion materials, such as audiotapes, are on display through Oct. 4 at Camarillo Airport, 550 Airport Way, from 8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., and from 2:15 to 5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays.
