San Diego police searched schools and parks in the Ocean Beach, Point Loma and Mission Beach area after nearly 30 razor blades were found on a park slide and in a sandbox, but no others were found, police said Tuesday.

A mother who had taken her daughter to the Sunset Collier Park in Ocean Beach spotted one of the double-sided blades on a circular slide about 11 a.m. Monday, Assistant Police Chief Dave Worden said. The park is across Sunset Cliffs Boulevard from Robb Field.

The blade was wedged in a plastic joint on the slide and sticking out in a manner that could have cut a child’s legs and hips, Worden said.

The mother happened to see the blade in the slide before her daughter went down it, Worden said. She called a park maintenance person, and the two of them found about 30 blades in the slide and strewn in the sand at the bottom of the slide.

A search by police turned up no more blades, but police “have taken extraordinary steps to search a broad area for blades,” Worden said. Officers combed about 20 schools and parks in the Ocean Beach, Point Loma and Mission Beach area looking for blades, he said. But none were found, and police have no suspects, he said.

Police also notified the San Diego Park and Recreation Department so its workers can be on the alert during their periodic inspections, he said.

“It appears that this was an isolated incident, but it doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen again,” Worden said.

“It’s important for the public to be aware, alert and watchful” of where their children play, he said.

Anyone at the park that morning who might have noticed anything suspicious is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 235-TIPS, he said.
