PREP ROUNDUP : Newport Harbor Gets Past Dana Hills in Volleyball

Newport Harbor rallied in the fifth game to defeat Dana Hills in a nonleague girls’ volleyball match Tuesday at Dana Hills High School.

Trailing, 9-4, in the fifth game, Newport Harbor scored 11 of the last 15 points to win the season-opener for both teams.

Maureen McLaren had 25 kills for the Sailors, who won, 6-15, 15-9, 15-10, 11-15, 15-13.

Misty May, who had six aces for Newport Harbor, hit aces for two of the final three points of the match.

In other nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Brea-Olinda 3, Troy 0--Stacey Pechan had 18 assists and Katie Bauer had eight kills for visiting Brea-Olinda in its season opener.

Capistrano Valley 3, Fountain Valley 0--Ally Carpenter had 20 kills for host Capistrano Valley (2-0), which won, 15-9, 15-13, 15-5.

Costa Mesa 3, Saddleback 0--Heather Robinson had eight kills and Teem Moore had 17 assists for host Costa Mesa (2-0). Saddleback is 0-2.

Cypress 3, Ocean View 1--Middle blocker Heather Lowe had 12 kills for Cypress (1-1), and Lupe Nava and Misty Hartung added nine kills each for the Centurions.

Garden Grove 3, Canyon 0--Shannon Wright had six kills for visiting Garden Grove, which won its season opener, 16-14, 15-7, 15-1.

Irvine 3, Trabuco Hills 0--Karissa Meith had 11 kills and Kristie Sherak had eight for host Irvine (1-0).

Orange 3, Katella 0--Amy Wilson and Mary Pezzetti each had seven kills for visiting Orange, which won its season opener, 15-5, 15-8, 15-7.

Sunny Hills 3, Esperanza 0--Outside hitter Rachel Hochgesang had 12 kills and setter Cori Rosenkranz had 23 assists, four kills, an ace and two blocks to lead Sunny Hills (2-0) over visiting Esperanza, 15-13, 15-2, 15-8.

Long Beach Poly 3, Estancia 0--Leah Braatz had eight kills for Estancia (0-1) in a 15-7, 15-10, 15-5 loss to the top-ranked team in the Southern Section Division 4-A.

Woodbridge 3, San Clemente 1--Outside hitter Nicole Quinn had 17 kills and setter Heather Ruhl had 30 assists for the Warriors (1-0), who won, 7-15, 15-10, 15-8, 15-12.

Liberty Christian 3, Brethren Christian 1--Laura Cordero had 12 kills, seven blocks and five aces for host Liberty Christian (2-0).

In nonleague water polo:

Capistrano Valley 11, Foothill 10--Jeremy Braxton-Brown and Alex Lesser each scored three goals to lead visiting Capistrano Valley (1-0). Steve Salata had four goals for Foothill (1-0).

Esperanza 13, Kennedy 6--Goalkeeper Craig Thomas scored a goal at the halftime buzzer to tie the score, 4-4, and Esperanza then pulled away in the second half at El Dorado High School. The Aztecs (1-0) outscored Kennedy, 3-0, in the third quarter and 6-3 in the fourth quarter. Max Miyahara had three goals in the fourth quarter for the Aztecs.

La Habra 15, Warren 3--Scott Seminoff scored eight goals and goalkeeper Tom Davis had nine saves for La Habra (5-0).

Trabuco Hills 14, Valencia 3--Ryan Thacher scored four goals and Chris Jacobson added three to lead Trabuco Hills (4-1) over visiting Valencia. The Mustangs had a season-high 23 steals, and goalkeepers Josh Kaiser and Dan Will combined to stop 17 shots.

Tustin 8, Fullerton 6--Jeremy Yorba scored four goals for visiting Tustin (1-0).

Irvine 15, Estancia 3--Ryan Mulholland scored five goals and Logan Smith and Brian Ronson each added four to lead the Vaqueros (4-0) past visiting Estancia. Goalkeeper Matt Donoghue had 12 saves for Irvine.

Los Alamitos 15, Glendale 6--Randy Wright scored six goals and was one of five players with three steals for host Los Alamitos (1-0).

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Brea-Olinda 13, La Habra 5--Rachel Buenviaje (6-3, 6-4, 6-3) and Alyssa Bickers (6-3, 6-1, 6-0) each swept in singles for visiting Brea-Olinda (4-1).

Esperanza 11, Villa Park 7--Helen Ji and Molly Shen swept three sets, 6-2, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 1 doubles for Esperanza (3-1). Stacy Spilly won two sets at No. 2 singles for the Aztecs and Ashley Thurston swept at No. 1 singles for Villa Park (0-2).

Orange 13, Orange Lutheran 5--Freshman Brenda Beyronneau swept three sets at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, to lead Orange (2-0) over visiting Orange Lutheran. The Panthers’ No. 2 doubles team of Nicole Wagner and Elizabeth Stenton also swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2.

Fountain Valley 17, Tustin 1--The Barons (1-0) swept all nine sets in singles to earn the victory over visiting Tustin. No. 1 Michelle Berkowitz won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and No. 2 Nina Basica and No. 3 Nora Kapche also swept. Fountain Valley’s No. 1 doubles team of Becky Gladding and Susie Hasagawa won three sets, as did the No. 2 team of Michelle Ouren and Kirsten Olsen.

Laguna Beach 17, Santiago 1--Winsom Falcone, Laurel Schmidt and Ashley Smith swept in singles for host Laguna Beach (1-1). Kristine Woods and Tara Kuhnert swept at No. 1 doubles for Laguna Beach, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0. Santiago is 4-1.

Santa Margarita 18, Ocean View 0--Sandy Needham swept at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, and Megan Scanlon won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, for the Eagles (3-1) at Coto de Caza. Heidi Garmon and Tiffany Brown swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-3, 6-0.

El Toro 13, Laguna Hills 5--Katie Maddrell swept in singles, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, for host El Toro (2-0). El Toro’s No. 1 doubles team of Denise Kenyon and Jessica Ledford also swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3.

Mater Dei 17, Fullerton 1--Erika Asmuss swept at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, and Sara Jarrett also swept at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for visiting Mater Dei (3-0).
