Jet Diverted to LAX After Crew Hears Loud Noise

A United Airlines jet was diverted to Los Angeles International Airport Wednesday after the crew heard an “explosive sound,” but the plane landed safely and no problems were found, an official said.
The Boeing 737 was carrying 114 people from San Francisco to Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport when the crew heard the noise coming from the wheel well area at 10,000 feet, said United spokesman Joe Hopkins. “It was an explosive sound,” said Hopkins. “It was the kind of sound you associate with a blown tire.”
The crew of Flight 1519, concerned the plane had lost a tire, diverted the flight to Los Angeles International, which has longer runways, Hopkins said. The plane landed safely at 2:46 p.m., and an inspection of the tires found no problems, he said. The cause of the noise was under investigation.
