MADD Chapter Wins Award for Bilingual Program

The National Safety Council will present the Orange County chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving with an Award of Commendation for its Hispanic Outreach program at a banquet Oct. 6 in New Orleans.

The Orange County program distributes educational materials, bumper stickers and coloring books, and also offers other support for the California Office of Traffic Safety’s bilingual campaign against drinking and driving.

Carolyn Charkey is the Orange County chapter president.

Frances R. Antes, 16, who competed as Orange County Miss T.E.E.N., was crowned 1991 California Miss T.E.E.N. She was selected over 65 contestants.

Frances won first places in the Scholastic Achievement and Volunteer Service categories.

The La Mirada resident was awarded a $700 cash scholarship and scholarships for two self-improvement courses, as well as an expense-paid trip to represent California in the national finals Nov. 24-30 in Kansas City, Mo.

Steve McEwen, a 1988 Irvine High graduate who is now a Stanford Unviersity student, has been selected to work on research projects this fall as a judicial intern for the U. S. Supreme Court. He is the son of Sylvia and Dave McEwen of Irvine.

Orange County Extension Home Economist Anne Cotter of Mission Viejo has been honored by the National Assn. of Extension Home Economists for her professional contributions in the Expanded Food and Nutritional program and for her work with various community agencies.

Irene Katsui, 35, for 12 years a librarian with the Library of Congress, has been named acquisitions librarian for the Norman E. Watson Library at Orange Coast College. Katsui has a master’s degree in library science from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and a bachelor’s degree in Asian studies from UC Santa Barbara.

The Newport-Irvine Rotary Club donated $2,000 to Irvine Temporary Housing Inc. to assist the community agency in receiving matching federal, state and county grants for its self-help program for families with financial problems. Frank F. Mead III is the club president.

Newport Beach physician Dr. Robert H. Bade has received the 1991 Humanitarian Award from the International Medical Corps, a nonprofit, non-political international relief organization based in Los Angeles.

The award, which will be presented Oct. 24 in Newport Beach, recognizes Bade’s work in establishing Orange County’s Medical Disaster Response program.

Beatrice Villa, 24, of Orange is a member of the Up With People program, an international educational and cultural group that travels the world to promote peace through understanding.

She is one of 700 representing 25 countries who were selected from among 8,000 candidates. The group will travel 30,000 miles during the next 10 months.
