Acting on an anonymous tip, sheriff’s deputies late Thursday arrested a man who was carrying 66 sticks of dynamite and an assault rifle in his car.
Frank J. Cavanaugh, 33, an unemployed transient, was stopped at Twin Oaks Valley Road near California 78 in San Marcos at 7:55 p.m. An AK-47 assault rifle was found under the hood of Cavanaugh’s car, and 66 sticks of dynamite were found inside the car, Sheriff’s Detective Bill Cruzen said.
An anonymous caller told authorities Wednesday that Cavanaugh had dynamite, Cruzen said. On Thursday, the informant called again to describe Cavanaugh’s car say that he was headed toward California 78.
Cavanaugh was booked into the Vista Jail on suspicion of possessing a destructive device, possessing a dangerous weapon and driving with a revoked driver’s license. He is being held in lieu of $10,650 bail and will be arraigned Monday.
