Oregon Falls Behind Early, Fails to Catch Utah, 24-17

Utah quarterback Frank Dolce passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as the Utes hung on to hand Oregon a 24-17 defeat Saturday night.

Oregon (2-1) staged a 14-point comeback in the fourth quarter, and came within 21 yards of tying the score with 2:29 to play.

On Oregon’s final possession, Utah defensive back Todd Lawson knocked the ball loose from Duck quarterback Danny O’Neil, and linebacker Anthony Davis recovered to seal the victory for Utah (3-1).

Dolce connected twice for touchdowns with receiver Bryan Rowley in the first quarter, covering 10 and 24 yards on the plays.

The first score, set up when Utah tackle Mike Lewis recovered a fumble at the Oregon 21, came with 10:25 left in the first quarter and the second came with 7:21 left.

After Utah’s Chris Yergensen kicked a 23-yard field goal, defensive back Preston Christensen intercepted an O’Neil pass and Dolce scored on a quarterback sneak with 13:27 left in the second quarter.

After a scoreless third quarter, Oregon got its first touchdown on a 27-yard pass play, O’Neil to Anthony Jones, to make it 24-10.
