Tampa Stadium has not been a kind place for the Buffalo Bills. So Jim Kelly’s message to his teammates was short and sweet.

“Let’s pack our bags and get out of here,” Kelly said after the Bills remained unbeaten Sunday with a 17-10 victory over the winless Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“This is one where the way we look at it is champions have to pull things out,” added Kelly, who capped a 76-yard touchdown drive with a 29-yard pass to Keith McKeller with 5:21 to go. “In a 16-game season, you run into a few games like this, and champions come through in the end.”

The Bills (4-0) struggled for the second consecutive week, despite amassing more than 400 yards total offense for the third time in four games. Kelly’s touchdown pass to McKeller snapped a 10-10 tie, but Tampa Bay’s bid for an upset didn’t die until the Bucs drove to the Buffalo eight-yard line. Chris Chandler’s final pass fell incomplete in the end zone as time expired.

Chandler, who completed 15 of 26 passes for 137 yards and was intercepted once, replaced Vinny Testaverde late in the second quarter when the Bucs starting quarterback left with a turf toe injury.

“This is a classic case of where we ran out of time,” Chandler said about the Buccaneers, who have lost all four games this season by a total of 13 points.

“We just get closer every week,” Tampa Bay Coach Richard Williamson said. “If we just keep fighting, I know we’ll start winning.”

Steve Christie’s 19-yard field goal for Tampa Bay tied the score midway through the fourth quarter. However, an inspired defense that frustrated the Bills most of the day finally caved in to Kelly and the no-huddle attack on Buffalo’s game-winning drive.

Kelly, who completed 20 of 35 passes for 322 yards, used a 14-yard run by Andre Reed and an 11-yard completion to James Lofton to set up McKeller’s touchdown. Carwell Gardner also scored on a one-yard run and Scott Norwood kicked a 33-yard field goal after a Nate Odomes interception.

The victory ended Buffalo’s five-game losing streak in Tampa Stadium, site of the Bills’ loss in last year’s Super Bowl. Tampa Bay has lost six consecutive games under Williamson.

“We’re not going to sneak up on anyone anymore. We have to start getting productive as far as putting points on the board,” said Kelly, who beat the Jets, 23-20, with a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Thurman Thomas last week.

“They didn’t stop us. We stopped ourselves,” Kelly added. “But the main thing is we had to score at the end, and we did.”

Tampa Bay’s defense held Thomas, the league’s leading rusher and receiver, to 54 yards in 17 attempts and two receptions for 19 yards.
