A wounded man found lying on a sidewalk in Compton had been shot in an apparent gang-related attack, authorities said Monday.

Officers investigating a report of gunfire found the victim lying on the sidewalk in front of 120 S. Matthison Street about 11:20 p.m. Sunday, Sgt. John Wilkinson said. “The victim had been shot once in the head by an unknown assailant,” Wilkinson said. Tyrone Thomas, 24, was in grave condition at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center.

“Witnesses stated that the victim and a companion were walking southbound on the east sidewalk of Matthison Street when a car approached them from behind,” Wilkinson said. “Words were spoken, with a gang slogan being yelled prior to shots being fired from the car, striking the victim,” he said. The car sped from the area and no arrests had been made.
