NOTEBOOK / SCOTT MILLER : Aztecs Need to Attack, Rowe Says

Share

Two theories from receivers on San Diego State’s invisible offense: Patrick Rowe says the Aztecs, 37-12 losers to UCLA Thursday, aren’t attacking defenses enough.

Jake Nyberg says the defense is playing so well it is putting pressure on the offense. Huh?

The more realistic theory, courtesy of Rowe, is up first.

“It’s a great game plan to take what the defense give us,” he said, “but you watch the Buffalo Bills and they take what the defense gives them and they take what they want, also.

“I think we have to go back and start attacking the defense, no matter what.”

Rowe, a preseason All-America candidate who has only 149 yards receiving this year (83 Thursday night), says SDSU isn’t attacking as much this year.

“I think we attacked much more (last year),” he said. “We threw deep a lot more.”

But he also noted that Dan McGwire, last year’s SDSU quarterback, was more experienced than any this year.

Nyberg said the SDSU defense has been playing better this year--true enough, it hasn’t been ranked last in the country--and therefore, SDSU’s offense is affected.

“The defense is playing great,” Nyberg said. “Even that adds pressure because when the defense is performing, you know you can blow a game wide open.

“We’ve got to come out in our first drive and score. We can’t wait and think we’re going to score 30 points in the third quarter.”

No, the Aztecs have yet to score 30 points in each of their past two games .

What you didn’t see on ESPN: Two male streakers made a dash down the field just after the first half ended, wearing nothing more than shirts wrapped around their heads and tennis shoes. They were detained by security guards.

There was also one more detained just before the second-half kickoff. This guy was wearing red and black face paint.

No truth to the rumor that SDSU Coach Al Luginbill attempted to sign them up as running backs.

The damages: Thre Aztecs re-injured their sprained right ankles Thursday: defensive ends Ramondo Stallings and Turaj Smith and linebacker Lou Foster. X-rays on Stallings and Smith were negative. Linebacker Andy Coviello re-separated his right shoulder and also suffered a right hand injury. He will be X-rayed. Defensive end Steve Matuszewicz suffered a cleat injury to his right hand; it is not broken. Running back Marshall Faulk, who gained 79 yards on 15 carries, hyperextended his left elbow and will have precautionary X-rays.
