SEAL BEACH : Group to Celebrate International Ties

Share

The Seal Beach International Friendship Assn. is celebrating its fifth anniversary on Sunday with an event at the senior center.

The association will present a program on Seal Beach’s sister city, Todos Santos, Mexico, along with an international potluck. The event will begin at 4 p.m. at the senior center, 707 Electric Ave., and the public is invited.

Although the association was formed five years ago, the city has had a sister city for only a year.

Delegations from Seal Beach visited China and Europe but after much discussion settled on Todos Santos, said June Hopkins, president of the group. She said it is similar to Seal Beach because it is “arty, quaint and charming,” has a Main Street area and is on the beach.

In one of the first exchanges between the two cities, a children’s baseball team from Todos Santos visited Seal Beach in June.

“The entire community got together to host these children and their coaches,” Hopkins said.

The children from Todos Santos went to a baseball game and Disneyland and played a game against their Seal Beach counterparts, beating them 24-1, Hopkins said.

On Nov. 11, a group from Seal Beach will be visiting Todos Santos. The 75-member friendship association is considering forming another sister city relationship with a town in Belgium, Hopkins said.
