A speeding sports car carrying three teen-agers went out of control Friday morning, plunged off a narrow, hilly roadway and crashed into the side of a house, killing one 17-year-old girl and seriously injuring the two other students.

The maroon 1979 Camaro sped past frantic construction workers at an estimated 70 m.p.h., flew 70 feet and leaped an outdoor swimming pool before crashing, upside down, into a bedroom in the side of a ranch-style home on Skyline Drive, authorities and witnesses said. The same house had been hit by an out-of-control car 13 years ago.

A resident of the house in the upscale neighborhood, who was alone at the time and sleeping in an adjacent bedroom, escaped injury Friday.

The fatally injured girl was identified as Megan Glover of Yorba Linda. She and her brother, Joshua, 14, were passengers in the car, which was driven by Courtney Droke, 16, of Fullerton. Megan was pronounced dead at St. Jude Hospital here.

Joshua and Courtney were taken to UC Irvine Medical Center. A medical center spokeswoman said Joshua was in critical condition with head injuries and a possible spine fracture. Courtney was in serious condition with head injuries and many scrapes and bruises, said hospital spokeswoman Fran Tardiff.

The car was westbound--driving away from Troy High where the three were enrolled--at the time of the 9 a.m. accident, police said. It was unclear if they had been at school before the crash and if so, why they left. School officials and relatives of the victims declined comment.

The crash came as the Camaro roared down narrow, twisting Skyline Drive, police said. Only minutes before the accident, city street-repair workers waved futilely for the speeding car to slow down.

As the car sped past the street workers, one of the teen-agers yelled, “Wahoo!,” according to witnesses.

Police said the car went out of control on a downhill grade. The Camaro struck a dirt embankment on the right side of Skyline, veered left across the road and tore through a metal guardrail at the corner.

The car then became airborne, sailing over the back yard and swimming pool before plunging upside down into the bedroom wall of the house.

The owners of the house involved in the crash are Joe and Joanne Campanella, a couple who had survived the MGM Grand fire in Las Vegas a decade ago. Joanne Campanella was sleeping in an adjoining bedroom when the accident occurred and escaped harm, Matson said. She and her husband declined to discuss the accident.
