SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Three streaks came to an end at Glendale High on Friday.

The first, Crescenta Valley’s streak of not allowing a point for eight consecutive quarters, lasted just 4 minutes 23 seconds before Burbank scored to end it.

The second, Burbank’s two consecutive shutout victories, held up for an additional 2:13 before Crescenta Valley scored.

The third, however, was in doubt until the final seconds.

Burbank linebacker Bryan Cyphers intercepted an Aaron Schaefer pass at the Bulldog 20-yard line on a fourth-and-four situation with two seconds remaining to preserve a 17-14 win over the Falcons and end Crescenta Valley’s two-game winning streak.

“I just thought about getting a hold of (the ball) and doing my job,” said Cyphers, who bobbled Schaefer’s pass before tucking it away and returning it to the Crescenta Valley 10-yard line.

Burbank (3-0) took the lead for good in the second quarter when Hector Valencia danced seven yards up the middle with 16 seconds left in the half to give the Bulldogs a 17-7 lead at intermission.

But Crescenta Valley (2-1) pulled to within 17-14 with 5:28 left in the fourth quarter on Paul Lopez’s three-yard run.

Schaefer then started the Falcons on their final march, taking them from their 27 deep into Burbank territory in 10 plays before the interception.

Four completed passes and a clipping penalty gave Crescenta Valley a second-and-four situation at the Bulldog 31 with 16 seconds to play, but two Schaefer passes fell incomplete before Cyphers’ interception.

Schaefer completed 16 of 21 passes for 271 yards, 194 to wide receiver Brett Miller.

The Bulldogs scored first, capping a nine-play, 68-yard opening drive when Alfonzo Velasco nailed a 31-yard field goal at the 7:37 mark.

Crescenta Valley answered on the ensuing possession when Schaefer connected with Miller on a 40-yard pass 2:13 later to take a 7-3 lead.
