From Associated Press

Sixth-seeded Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland defeated eighth-seeded John McEnroe, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, 6-3, Sunday to win the Swiss Indoor at Basel, Switzerland.

Ranked 25th McEnroe, the defending champion, started well, breaking Hlasek’s serve in the first game and serving strongly. But after losing the tiebreaker, McEnroe faltered.

Hlasek broke McEnroe’s serve three times in the second set and took advantage of a disputed line call to take a 3-1 lead in the final set on his way to wrapping up the victory.

“I just wish I’d played better,” McEnroe said.

It was Hlasek’s second consecutive victory over McEnroe, who still leads their series, 4-3.

McEnroe said after his victory over Jimmy Connors in Saturday’s semifinals that he plans to retire at the end of next year because he’s “not satisfied being 15th or 20th” in the world. He said he hopes to play in the Barcelona Olympics first.

Unseeded Gianluca Pozzi of Italy upset third-seeded Aaron Krickstein, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), in the final of the Queensland Open at Brisbane, Australia, for the first title of his career.

Krickstein needed to win the tournament to pass the $2-million mark in career earnings, but the defeat continued his two-year winless streak.

Pozzi, ranked only 136th in the world, earned $32,400--the biggest paycheck of his career.

Monica Seles needed only 65 minutes to beat Mary Joe Fernandez, 6-3, 6-0, in the final of the Noika Masters at Essen, Germany.

The score was tied, 3-3, in the first set, but Seles won the final nine games.

Larisa Savchenko of the Soviet Union won the St. Petersburg Cup by defeating Barbara Rittner of Germany, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, at St. Petersburg, U.S.S.R.

Top-seeded Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere of Switzerland won the Bayonne Open by outlasting second-seeded Leila Meskhi of the Soviet Union, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, at Bayonne, France.

Frederic Fontang of France upset top-seeded Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, to win the Palermo ATP tournament at Palermo, Sicily.
