Electricity Cut to 2,300 Homes

About 2,300 homes lost power Monday night and a small electrical fire broke out when a circuit shut itself off in what a Southern California Edison official called a “glitch.”

The blackout occurred at 7:15 p.m. when the circuit break occurred and the small fire erupted under the newly built bridge at Newport Boulevard and 22nd Street, Police Officer David Walker said. The fire was quickly extinguished.

The outage was caused by a “circuit relay”--an automatic shutdown of power as a precautionary measure when there is a glitch in the system, Edison area manager Jerry Dominguez said. “We still don’t know what caused the problem.”
