WORLD IN BRIEF : PERU : Former President May Go on Trial
- Share via
Opponents of Peruvian President Alan Garcia hailed a legislative vote to allow him to be tried for embezzlement as a victory for morality in government. The Chamber of Deputies voted 95-57 with 26 abstentions to send Garcia’s case to the Senate, where another vote will decide whether to lift his congressional immunity so he may face trial in the Supreme Court. Garcia is accused of tax evasion and of having used $500,000 in government funds to build three houses in Lima. Garcia, 42, president from 1985 to 1990, accuses his political enemies of mounting a smear campaign to hurt his chances for re-election.
