Clippers Open Camp in La Jolla

The Clippers, once residents of San Diego, return to the area today to open a new training camp in preparation for a new season. The Clippers had trained at Cal Poly Pomona since moving to Los Angeles in 1984.

Before leaving on an exhibition swing through the Midwest and East next Thursday, they are scheduled for only one workout a day, unusual in that most teams have two-a-days. But Coach Mike Schuler, beginning his second season with the Clippers, used that schedule in Portland with positive results.

Despite threats by the agent for James Edwards that the recently acquired center would hold out unless given a contract extension, Clipper officials expect to see him today.

That would leave first-round draft pick LeRon Ellis, a victim of bad timing, as the only absentee. The Clippers are over the salary cap, so they can offer only the minimum of $180,000--about $400,000 less than the going rate. His options are to sign or play overseas.

The Clippers on Thursday night announced the signing of guard Darwin Cook, who played in Italy the past two seasons.
