There Is Still Room for the Good News, Too

Last fall I read in The Times about the dark days that had come to a young USC football player. I was moved to write a note to him in care of the USC athletic department. Several months later, I received a Christmas card signed, “Jason Oliver, 43.” The cover was Boynton’s cat hanging for dear life onto a Christmas tree.

I knew then that Jason Oliver was a courageous, considerate and eloquent young man who would find his way through, and will probably brighten the lives of others as he goes. I have no doubt his parents knew this, too.
