COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Irvine Wins Big West Water Polo Opener

UC Irvine opened its Big West Conference water polo season with a 16-6 victory over Fresno State Saturday at Heritage Park in Irvine.

Pablo Yrizar, Tom Lowrey and Skylar Putman each scored three goals for the fourth-ranked Anteaters (8-2, 1-0).

Irvine led, 11-3, at the half. Ninth-ranked Fresno is 6-9, 1-2.

At the Stanford cross-country invitational:

Irvine men finish third--Senior Aaron Mascorro finished 18th in 24 minutes 37 seconds over eight kilometers on the Stanford golf course, leading the Anteaters to a third-place finish. Sophomore Traci Goodrich ran the 5K course in 17:08 to finish fifth, leading the Irvine women to fifth place. Goodrich was 29 seconds behind the winner, Lucy Nusrala of Oregon, who had a time of 16:39.

In the Cal State Fullerton volleyball tournament:

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Lael Perlstrom had 15 kills for San Luis Obispo and was named the most valuable player of the tournament. San Luis Obispo and Sacramento State tied for first place in the tournament, each winning three matches. Becky Howlett had 18 kills for Fullerton (6-15). Howlett and teammate Stephanie Scofield were named to the all-tournament team.

Earlier, the Titans lost in five games to St. Mary’s, despite 25 kills by Howlett and 25 digs by Scofield. In the match, freshman Casey Baldwin injured her left knee and might be out for the season.

In nonconference women’s volleyball:

Fresno State 3, UC Irvine 0--Andrea Radmilovich and Suzie Ragul each had eight kills for No. 19 Fresno (14-4, 5-1). Dana Chalais had eight kills for Irvine (4-8, 0-5).

Chapman 3, UC San Diego 1--Debi Waller had 20 kills and Rena Strange had 16 kills for Chapman (13-9, 1-0).

Liz Vesanovic had 13 kills for UC San Diego (14-4), which is the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III.

In the West Coast Fall Men’s Collegiate Tennis Championships:

UC Irvine’s Roberts advances--Irvine’s Mike Roberts rallied from match point to defeat USC’s Andras Lanyi 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2) in a quarterfinal match at the Warner Center Club in Woodland Hills.

Roberts will face David Kass of Michigan, the tournament’s second-seeded player and the seventh-ranked player on the Volvo Tennis/Collegiate Rankings, in a semifinal today.

Nonconference women’s soccer:

UC Irvine 2, Cal Poly Pomona 1 (OT)--Freshman Molly Lynch scored two unassisted goals for visiting Irvine (6-5-1). Lynch’s first goal tied the score, 1-1, with 7:02 left in regulation. Her second came 12 minutes into the first of two overtime periods.

In the New Mexico State golf tournament:

UC Irvine eighth--Irvine sophomore William Wanagisawa finished in a four-way tie for eighth at 215, one under par for 54 holes in Las Cruces. Irvine finished in an eighth-place tie with UC Santa Barbara with 883 strokes.
