Tokyo Winners: John Sayles’ “City of Hope,” which deals with race relations, class and politics in a fictional New Jersey city, has won the Grand Prix at the Tokyo International Film Festival. Alan Parker won the best director award for “The Commitments.” Special jury prizes went to “A Brighter Summer Day,” a joint Japan-U.S. work directed by Edward Yang, and to the Chinese film “The Spring Festival,” directed by Huang Jianzhong.
