Fernandez Undergoes Surgery
Padres shortstop Tony Fernandez underwent surgery for 1 1/2 hours Monday to reconstruct the ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb.
The surgery was performed by Drs. Merlin Hamer and Jan Fronek at Scripps Clinic. They said Fernandez will have to keep the thumb immobile for four weeks, and then begin rehabilitation in his hometown of San Pedro de Marcoris, Dominican Republic.
Fernandez injured his thumb while he was with the Toronto Blue Jays, and aggravated it in late July. A four-time Gold Glove winner, Fernandez committed a career-high 20 errors, despite missing 17 games. He hit .272 with four homers and 38 RBIs.
