SPORTSCOPE : No. 3 UCLA Leads Field at Water Polo Tournament

The UCLA water polo team, ranked third nationally, will play host to the first Bruin Cup, a tournament featuring club, international and college teams, on Saturday and Sunday at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center on campus.

Matches are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

College teams include No. 6 USC, No. 12 UC San Diego and UC Riverside. The field also includes the Harvard and Olympic clubs from America, the Miadost Club from Yugoslavia and the Croatian national team.

Last week the Bruins (7-3 overall, 1-0 in Pacific 10 Conference play) upset top-ranked California, 8-7.

The No. 5 Pepperdine water polo team (10-3 overall, 2-0 in Big West Conference play) will travel to No. 8 Pacific (4-5, 1-2) on Saturday and No. 9 Fresno State (6-9, 1-2) on Sunday.

The Waves, winners of three consecutive matches, beat No. 2 Cal State Long Beach, 9-6, and No. 10 UC Santa Barbara, 12-8, last week.

The No. 4 UCLA women’s volleyball team (10-2, 4-0 as the week began) will play Friday at Washington and Saturday at Washington State.

Last week the Bruins defeated Arizona and Arizona state, each in three games, and UC Santa Barbara in five.

The No. 16 Pepperdine women’s volleyball team (12-4, 4-0 in West Coast Conference play) will travel to Santa Clara (11-6, 1-1) tonight, St. Mary’s (7-10, 0-2) on Friday and the University of San Francisco (4-9, 0-2) on Saturday.

Last week the Waves ran their WCC winning streak to 37 matches by defeating Gonzaga and Portland.

The No. 12 UCLA men’s soccer team (8-2) will play Friday at USF and Sunday at St. Mary’s.

Last week the Bruins, who have won three consecutive matches, defeated the University of San Diego, 3-0.

The UCLA women’s golf team shot 928 to finish ninth at last week’s Arizona State tournament.

Arizona won with 880. UCLA freshman Jenny Park tied for eighth with 225.

The UCLA men’s golf team will compete Monday and Tuesday at the Red River tournament in Dallas.

The Pepperdine men’s golf team will compete Monday and Tuesday at the University of the Pacific tournament.

In last week’s New Mexico State tournament, the Waves finished third with 865, and New Mexico State was first with 855. Pepperdine’s Jeff Gove and Lars Herne tied for third, each with 212.

The Pepperdine women’s golf team will compete Saturday and Sunday at the University of Iowa tournament.

The UCLA women’s and men’s cross-country teams are idle this weekend. In last week’s Stanford Invitational, the Bruin men finished 10th among 14 teams. UCLA freshman Creighton Harris placed 15th in the men’s open division, finishing the 8-K course in 25 minutes 51 seconds.

The Pepperdine men’s and women’s cross-country teams will compete against USC at 10 a.m. Saturday at Elysian Park. In last week’s Biola Invitational, the Wave men finished seventh among eight teams and the Pepperdine women were fifth among five. Pepperdine’s Sheila Logan ran the 5-K course in 20:35.3 and finished 15th.
