SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The numbers were big for Buena High and bad for Hueneme on Thursday night at Ventura High as the Bulldogs rambled to a 49-12 Channel League victory.

Buena relied on good field position, outstanding offensive-line play and the running of George Keiaho and Matt Kemsley to dominate from the start. Keiaho bobbed and weaved for 204 yards and two touchdowns in 14 carries, and Kemsley blasted for 104 yards and two touchdowns in nine carries.

Altogether, the Bulldogs rolled up a school-record 409 yards on the ground, surpassing the mark of 386 set last week in a 38-21 win over Santa Barbara.

The numbers were just as impressive on the defensive side. Buena (4-1, 2-0 in league play) sacked David Andrade nine times for 59 yards in losses, led by linebacker Bob Gregorchuk with three sacks.

Getting the ball for the first time at the Hueneme 37, the Bulldogs needed only to hand it twice to the powerful-striding Keiaho for a score. Keiaho broke off tackle for 27 yards and then scampered in from the 10 to give Buena a 7-0 lead three minutes into the game.

Andrade led the Vikings (0-5, 0-2) back as he completed five of his first six passes during a 13-play, 77-yard march. Four receptions were made by wide receiver Chris Zapata, the last a perfectly timed catch in the corner of the end zone. But kicker Robert Ralston was stopped short on a two-point conversion attempt to leave the score 7-6.

A 33-yard return by Robert Simpson on the ensuing kickoff gave the Bulldogs good field position at the Hueneme 48. Again Buena needed only two plays to score--Keiaho dashed for 12 yards and Kemsley broke a dive play for 36 yards.

The Bulldogs showed more versatility on their next series as Keiaho and Kemsley worked the ball from the Buena 32 to the Viking 16 in four plays. After Buena was penalized twice for illegal procedure, quarterback Matt Ertman completed his only three passes of the night, including a 14-yard strike to wide receiver Dan Lemp on fourth and eight for the touchdown. Lemp outwrestled Adam Anaya for the ball in the end zone to make the score 21-6.

The Bulldogs put the game away on the next kickoff when Gary Lipp recovered a loose ball in the end zone after a big hit at the three by Gregorchuk on Hueneme return man Sharif Waldrum.
