PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAMS : Lyght Sprains Right Ankle

Share

The Rams’ desire to get No. 1 pick Todd Lyght into the game more this Sunday was jeopardized Thursday when he turned his right ankle in practice and did not return.

“Doesn’t look good right now,” secondary coach Tom Bettis said.

Lyght, who was pushing both Jerry Gray and Darryl Henley for playing time, suffered swelling of the ankle, which was labeled a slight sprain when X-rays proved negative.

The Rams were a little puzzled this week when the Raiders released disgruntled defensive lineman Mike Wise a day after the Rams had offered a sixth-round pick for him.

Ram officials said they assumed that Al Davis, who had been demanding a No. 3 from the Rams, simply didn’t want the Rams to get him and was willing to forgo a pick to do it.

The Rams put in a waiver claim for Wise but lost out when the Cleveland Browns claimed him.

The team now is expected to activate defensive end Bill Hawkins, who has been on the injured-reserve list because of sore ribs.

At the 1 p.m. deadline Thursday, the Rams had 18,590 tickets remaining for Sunday’s game against the Chargers, which means the game will be blacked out locally.
