A jury will hear opening statements Tuesday morning in the double-murder retrial of Elisabeth (Betty) Broderick, the former La Jolla socialite accused of murder in the shooting death of her ex-husband and his new wife.

The panel was seated after three weeks of jury selection in which attorneys asked potential jurors about topics such as divorce, alcoholism, children and lawyers.

Broderick, 44, is charged with shooting her ex-husband, Daniel T. Broderick, 44, and his new wife, Linda Kolkena Broderick, 28, in the bedroom of the couple’s home near Balboa Park on the morning of Nov. 5, 1989.

Daniel Broderick was a prominent attorney and former president of the local bar association. His former wife maintains she was abused in her marriage and that her husband used his legal influence to cheat her in divorce proceedings.

Broderick was arrested the day of the shooting and has remained in custody since then.

The main panel was seated Friday morning, and four alternates were selected by attorneys Friday afternoon.
