Auto Dependence

Share

Linda Angeloff Sapienza’s commentary on Southern Californians’ dependency on the automobile (“Throw Down Those Car Keys and Walk!” Sept. 29) reminded me of the eight years I spent in Toronto without owning a car. I didn’t need a car because of the excellent public transit system in place. Like Montreal, Toronto has an excellent subway system available to everyone.

What we lack in San Diego is not the desire to walk or use public transit but a transit system that works.

The San Diego Trolley is a fine example of putting tax dollars to work, but it isn’t nearly adequate for anyone working out of the trolley line area.

Until a working and practical transit system is in place, the majority of commuters will rely on the automobile to travel.
